A Sustainable, Cost-Efficient Alternative
Whether restoring an existing foam roof, rejuvenating a rusted metal roof or extending the life of a single-ply membrane, Polo International has a variety of solutions to meet the specification needs of any roofing project. Polo’s spray polyurethane foam and specialty coatings provide seamless insulation and waterproof barriers that fully-adhere to substrates; eliminating common sources of leaks and pooling water beneath roofing material.
From quick-set spray applications to highly-reflective coatings that reduce cooling loads and minimize solar gain – Polo’s unique roof systems were designed to meet specific project requirements.
A High-Performance Roof Coating
UltraBond Silicone is a single-component, moisture-cured silicone coating for commercial and industrial roof applications. The product is petroleum- and solvent-free so it is easier on the environment (and the applicators) while still offering the same functionality as traditional petroleum-based roofing materials.
Save Time & Money
Replacing an existing, fully-adhered or mechanically-fastened membrane is costly and labor intensive. With UltraBond Silicone, an existing roof can be restored without incurring needless expenses or interrupting the daily operations of a business.
Additionally, the product is 95% solids by volume which means 95% of what is in the can stays on the roof once the product has cured. Traditional silicones contain up to 30% solvent – solvent that is released into the air and harmful to the environment. And, because it is 95% solids, less product is required to achieve the dry mil thickness for specifications; saving time and labor costs. for commercial roof restorations UltraBond recoat project on 535,000 square foot roof – PVC single-ply membrane mechanically fastened on 1-inch ISO with BUR and steel deck beneath. UltraBond Silicone re-coat resulted in 68% savings over roof tear-off.
Second Most Common Element
Silicone for roofing applications is a proven, reliable technology, currently in use on a variety of structures all over the world. In most cases, a silicone membrane is applied over a spray polyurethane foam base, creating a moisture-resistant seal that is flexible, durable and UV-stable.
Silicone is made from silicon metal, the second most common element on earth, making it one of the most widely available natural resources. Its recovery and processing is simple and has minimal environmental impact. The per-unit cost of silicone is low. In comparison, traditional roofing is petroleum-based, with high raw material costs and significant environmental impact in reclamation, processing and disposal. The supply of petroleum is becoming scarcer and is constantly impacted by volatile world events. When the cost of petroleum fluctuates, so does the cost of petroleum-based roofing systems.
Eco-Friendly – White is the New “Green”
UltraBond Silicone is a highly-reflective white coating that can contribute up to 7 LEED points to a project and has achieved ratings from the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC). Through CRRC’s independent testing, it received a solar reflectivity rating of .88 and a thermal admittance rating of .87. Both properties are measured from 0 to 1 and the higher the value, the “cooler” the roof. Key benefits of cool roofs include:
- Energy savings and global warming mitigation
- Reduction in urban heat island effect and smog
- Improved occupant comfort
- Complies with codes and green building programs; utility rebates
A cool roof can significantly reduce cooling energy costs and increase comfort levels by reducing temperature fluctuations inside a building. According to the CRRC, average energy savings range from 7% to15% of total cooling costs.
During warmer summer months, temperatures can reach 170° degrees F on a low-slope black asphalt roof, and they can drop to -20° degrees F during the winter in northern and higher elevated regions. Much of the heat generated by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation transfers to the building interior, and can have significant adverse effects on energy consumption.
Installing cool roofs in cities can have significant positive impact on the environment as well. Urban heat zones and islands are caused in part by a significant number of large dark colored roofs in urban areas that can reach extremely high temperatures. This macro heat effect from hot buildings and pavement causes smog, increased energy consumption and discomfort to building occupants. A cool roof can help save the environment and save money. Many states offer utility discounts and rebates to building owners who install cool roofs.
The use of UltraBond also lessens the impact on landfills – the product fully-adheres to existing substrates, eliminating the need for roof tear-offs and the disposal of old roofing material
Extends the Life of a Roof
UltraBond is an elastomeric coating that creates a uniform, seamless surface remaining flexible even in low temperatures. It expands and contracts with changing weather conditions, protecting a roof’s surface from the sun’s damaging rays. This enables the coating to endure continuous thermal stresses over the lifetime of the roof.
We’ve Passed the Tests
UltraBond has passed the ASTM E108 flame spread test, the Factory Mutual (FM) burn test and is UL Class A fire-rated – the highest level of fire protection available. Other ASTM testing provided ratings for tensile strength tear resistance, hardness, water immersion, permeability, reflectance, admittance and flash point
No Ponding Water Issues
Roof coatings made with acrylic, urethane or asphalt can soften under the stress of ponding water. This can result in a coating that bubbles or peels away from the substrate; leaving a roof exposed to leaks and water intrusion. By comparison, silicone is an inert material that does not decompose – its unique chemistry creates a coating that will not degrade under ultraviolet rays or extreme weather conditions.
- High solids = no shrinkage or adhesion loss during the drying / curing process.
- Unique chemistry = High cross-link density in the cured film
- Unique chemistry = extremely hydrophobic (water repelling) silicone polymer composition.
- Humidity driven = ambient humidity actually helps drive the curing of the film. High humidity will greatly slow the drying of alternative chemistry.
