A Brief History of Spray Polyurethane Foam

Sprayed Polyurethane Foam has been used as a commercial roofing and insulation material for over 30 years. While at one time Sprayed Polyurethane Foam was considered only as an alternative to built-up roofing, SPF commercial roofs now protect a wide range of buildings. Over time, through comprehensive independent studies, SPF systems have proven to be dependable, long lasting and very affordable. Today there are foam roofs that have been in place for over 30 years and by all appearances they should he able to last indefinitely, as long as they are properly maintained.

What is Sprayed Polyurethane Foam?

Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) is a combination of isocyanate and polyol. These two components are fed through a proportioner which heats then pumps the two separate components to the spray gun where they are mixed and sprayed onto the substrate. Because the foam is sprayed onto the roof as a liquid, it forms a single continuous membrane that is seamless and very stable. SPF requires a clean surface for proper application. It must be dry and free of contaminants such as oil. The surface must also be properly fastened to the substrate in accordance with building code. A protective topcoat is required and is typically sprayed on, but may also be applied with hand or power rollers.

TEN ADVANTAGES OF SPRAY POLYURETHANE FOAM

1. Ability to Stop Leaks and is Weather Resistant: Polyurethane foam forms a monolithic, self-flashing surface, which effectively seals against leaks. Further protection comes from the weather resistant elastomeric coating applied over the foam. Foam can be sprayed slope-to-drain, facilitating water removal.
2. Reduces and Simplifies Roof Maintenance: The applied polyurethane foam system requires minimal maintenance. If damaged. caulking is sufficient for repair in most cases.
3. Provides Superior Insulating Efficiency:Polyurethane foam is the most efficient form of thermal insulation available. SPF Systems usually pay for themselves in energy savings in 4 ½ years.
4. Versatility: Polyurethane foam can be applied to surfaces with irregular shapes and penetrations. SPF is especially suited for roofing, because it can be applied over the existing roof, which can eliminate the need for costly tear-off of the old roof.
5. Adherence to Most Surfaces: A seamless layer of foam will fully adhere to the substrate (horizontal or vertical) and withstands high wind stresses.
6. Lightweight: Complete Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Systems are many times lighter than tar and gravel roof systems. When applied to an existing roof, the loose ballast removed usually weighs more than the replacement foam system. This results in the new roof being lighter than the original.
7. Reduces Building Movement: By placing the insulation on the outside, the foam system reduces building movement and thermal shock.
